Sensitive Skin :: Almond Face Care

Weleda sensitive skin Almond facial skincare range

The Almond Sensitive Skin Facial Range has been specially formulated by Weleda to care for the most sensitive of skin.  As previously written about in “Almond :: the Best Choice for Sensitive Skin“, Sweet Almond oil is the perfect choice to use in this range.

I’ve had eczema since I was a child, but I didn’t really give my skin very much thought until I became pregnant with my now teenage daughter.  Suddenly I found that my face reacted to pretty much everything I tried to put on it.  The tops of my cheeks burned and felt tight.  My skin became dry and flakey.  It was horrible.  Demoralising. I wondered whether it might settle down once my daughter was born.  It didn’t.  I had developed sensitive skin.  Almond oil was recommended by my mother. I tried it and have used it ever since.

My skin reacts to various chemicals added to cosmetics (parabens, SLS/SLES, etc).  My scalp is particularly sensitive and painful if I use a product with a triggering ingredient.  If you have sensitive skin, you know how unpleasant it can be when it flares!  There are many products that I cannot use and it can be problematic if I forget to bring something supposedly simple, like shampoo, with me when I am away from home.

I have to be very careful with my skin and have spent a lot of time trying to find products that I can use.

Sensitive Skin Facial Care

Sensitive skin Almond facial oil from Weleda

Almond Soothing Facial Oil £17.95

I’ve used almond oil on my face for over a decade.  It is fantastic as both a soothing and moisturising facial oil, but also as a cleanser. It’s a good choice for removing eye makeup and I’m all for products that do double-duty! It also goes a long way and even though it gets pretty much daily use here, a bottle lasts and lasts!

This wonderfully gentle facial oil is made from organic sweet almond oil blended with extract of organic blackthorn blossom and plum kernel oil. It makes for a light, quickly absorbed oil that  helps to reduce irritation and sensitivity.  I’m prone to very dry and flaky skin. Oh how my forehead and cheeks can itch!  So I layer up on my face care.  I use the oil as a base layer, leave it to absorb a little and then add my day or night cream.

It’s the oil I use for facials. If you are in the local area, you are welcome to book with me and enjoy a bit of pampering courtesy of myself and this fabulous oil.

If you are prone to blackheads, it is also the perfect oil to use to do a triple cleanse and I would be happy to demonstrate this for you. And if you’d like to try it at home, I’ve linked to this fab short tutorial from Weleda Australia (below) – repeat three times!

As a bonus, the oil is suitable for vegans too!  It is one of my top recommendations from the Weleda range.

Discover silky, smooth skin and inner radiance with an Almond Soothing Facial Oil cleanse. 🌸 MASSAGE the face firmly but gently, with several drops of the Almond Soothing Facial Oil for 2 – 3 minutes. 🌸 RELAX, rest and breathe out. 🌸 APPLY a warm muslin washcloth until cool. 🌸 WIPE away the oil residue, refresh the washcloth and repeat until all the excess oil is removed. 🌸 The simple and effective blend of cold pressed Sweet Almond Oil, Plum Seed Oil and Blackthorn Flower Extract, gently dissolves away oily product residue without stripping the body’s own protective layer. Just feel the texture of your skin now…🙌🏻 . . . #weleda #inharmonywithnature #almond #superfood #oilcleanse #facialoil #beauty #greenbeauty #naturalbeauty #organic #ethical #fairtrade #beautyblogger #beautybloggersau

Sensitive Skin Almond Cleansing lotion from Weleda

Almond Soothing Cleansing Lotion £10.50

Skip the soap! This light, creamy lotion is perfect for cleansing sensitive skin.  Soap can be very drying on your face.  Plus, if you’re anything like me, chances are you’re sensitive to sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate (SLS and SLES). This is a great replacement for SLS/SLES laden foaming facial washes.  I’m not one for faffing on the cleansing front . This is a wash your face and get on with it product (so good for teenagers too!)

And yes, it’s another product that is suitable for vegans (so another big thumbs up!)

Sensitive skin almond facial cream from Weleda

Almond Soothing Facial Cream £15.75

If you have dry sensitive skin, this facial cream is the one for you.  I initially used this cream (along with the facial oil) to help heal and balance my skin.  It really helped to soothe my often itchy, flaking skin. Over time, I was able to move onto the Wild Rose and then the  Pomegranate range, that I now use.

Almond Soothing Facial Lotion £15.75

This gentle facial lotion is my lotion of choice to recommend for teens just starting out with a skin care routine.  It is the lotion used by my teenage daughter (alongside the fabulous Aknedoran cleansing range for balancing spotty or acne-prone skin and the Almond Soothing Cleansing Lotion). But, of course, it is fabulous for anyone who has sensitive combination skin.

Various Other Reviews

Oh wow! When I looked for further reviews to include, there was no shortage of them!  Please bear in mind that there have been some price changes at the end of January 2017.

Some useful videos from Weleda about the Almond Facial range.  However, I would say that although the range is “fragrance-free” it is made with almond oil and, therefore, does smell of almonds.

Favourite Natural Skincare Products for Men

Father’s Day is fast approaching in the UK (18th June) and if you’re looking for a gift for that special Dad in your life, Weleda has you covered.  So it got me thinking about products for Men and what I would suggest from the Weleda range – also perfect for introducing teenagers and that tricky pre-teen age to a more natural approach to their skincare.

I have to admit that I tend to baulk at “gendered” products and, indeed, there are plenty of Weleda products outside of the “Men’s” range that are very popular with men.  However, for some, there is the reassurance of the product being targeted at a specific sex/gender and, skin-wise, there are some generalisations that can be made as to the differing skincare needs between men and women (and, as such, some products cross-over nicely and may also be of interest).

So, I’m going to concentrate on the “Men’s” range first, before suggesting a few other products that are also popular with men, or may be of interest or help (for particular skin needs).

Weleda Men’s Skincare and Shower/Bath ranges

The Men’s range has a fresh, invigorating scent coming from the inclusion of organic rosemary, may chang and vetiver and is formulated with men’s skin in mind.

Men's Shower Gift Set

The Men’s Shower Gift Set is a great little set, saving £5.40 on the individual products of Active Shower GelMen’s 24h Roll On Deodorant and Eco Bath Scrunchie .  The Active Shower Gel (£7.95 individually) is suitable for vegans and is free from SLS/SLES and other potentially toxic ingredients.

Launched this year, the Men’s 24h Roll On Deodorant (£7.95 individually) echoes the scent of the Men’s range with a herbal fresh scent.  It’s free of aluminium salts and has been tested to last for 24 hours.

I have to admit that when I first came across the concept of scrunchies, I was rather cynical about them! However, I have to say that I am now a convert.  The Eco Bath Scrunchie (£3.50 individually and available in other colours) is the perfect thing to increase the lather when using the shower gel (plus you only need the smallest amount with it and it exfoliates your skin whilst you scrub!).  It’s made from recycled plastic mesh.

Men's Wash Bag Gift from Weleda

Next up is the Men’s Shower Bag gift set.  Containing the Active Shower Gel, Shaving Cream and Moisture Cream in a drawstring bag, it retails for £19.95 and offers a saving of £14.45 on buying the products individually!  The Shaving Cream (£10.50 individually) is a rich, but gentle cream containing almond, goat’s milk and viola tricolor – all good for skin potentially irritated by regular shaving.   The Moisture Cream (£15.96 individually)  is light and quickly absorbed.  Extract of marshmallow root to helps to soothe the skin whilst Witch hazel helps to counter any inflammation post shave.  Organic sesame and jojoba oils help to nourish and protect the skin.  The saving on buying these products together is fantastic – and it’s a handy way of stocking up on your favourite items.

Weleda Aftershave Balm

The one remaining Men’s range product that I haven’t mentioned yet is the Aftershave Balm (£15.95) – packed full of cooling aloe vera and soothing chamomile, it’s the perfect way to follow up a shave.  Also of interest may be the Shaving Brush, made from sustainable FSC grass wood and natural wild boar bristles.

It’s worth noting that where a deodorant spray is preferred, I’d recommend the Sage Deodorant Spray .  Whilst I’m a fan of roll-ons, my partner isn’t and the Sage is his deodorant of choice.  Also, the Iris facial range is a good alternative choice for men, as is the Aknedoran Cleansing range for more problematic skin prone to breakouts.   You can choose any 3 items of facial skincare and save 15% – yet another way to make a good saving!

Other Favourite Products for Men

Unsurprisingly, Weleda’s Arnica range is very popular.  As I type, my partner is upstairs relaxing in the Arnica Muscle Soak post run and I’ve just been informed that he’s low on the Arnica Sports Shower Gel (that’s timing for you, but it poured with rain yesterday and whilst it’s beautifully sunny today, the wind is up and it’s cooler than it has been, so I guess that makes it good for running?  Either way, he has a day off and it gave him the opportunity to go out in the afternoon for a change).

The Arnica Muscle Soak (£13.50) really is a revelation.  Not just for sporty types who enjoy a good run (like my partner), it’s also perfect for the end of a hard day when everything aches.  I’m yet to write an article on Arnica as a Lead Plant, but in summary it is THE choice for helping to soothe aching muscles and joints, bruises and strains.  Not just for the body, sometimes our bruises  and aching aren’t solely physical. With aromatherapeutic rosemary and lavender essential oils, this is a soak that’s good for the spirit too.  It’s a very aromatic soak and packs a punch scent-wise.  However, this isn’t one for the younger members of your family and isn’t recommended for children under 3 years.

The Arnica Sports Shower Gel (£7.95) is perfect for that post workout shower.  It’s my partner’s first choice of body wash.  Bearing in mind it’s popular here, I tend to buy the soak and shower gel as a bundle in the Arnica Sports Gift Box (£16.95) is a popular buy here as buying the soak and shower gel together gives a saving of  £4.50 on buying the products individually.  Arnica Massage Oil is also very useful for anyone who is very active, or prone to aches and pains.  It’s a great follow-up to the Muscle Soak.

The refreshing Citrus range is another good choice.  Made using biodynamically grown lemons from the Somalia Co-operative in Sicily,  the Citrus Body Wash (£7.95) is the perfect wake-me-up partner to a morning shower.  With soothing aloe vera and nourishing shea butter and sesame oil, Citrus Hydrating Body Lotion (£14.95) is another good choice to care for the body’s skin.    Fragrance free lotion choices would be the Calendula (£9.95) or White Mallow (£11.95) lotions (not just for babies – their mildness means they won’t interfere with any preferred body wash and deodorant scent).

Last, but by no means least is the iconic Skin Food.  I’m in good company as a fan – there are so many positive reviews out there! It celebrated its 90th birthday at London Fashion Week last year (2016) – testament to its popularity and effectiveness!  I’m not its only fan in this house. My partner does a physical job and, as such, can be prone to dryness, cracks and callouses on his hands.  Skin Food is what he uses to soothe and smooth this and it makes a difference.

It’s thick. Very thick. And it takes a little while to sink in.  But it pays dividends on the small amount of patience waiting for it to soak in.

A quote from the actor, Andrew Cooper:

“I was on a shoot in Antigua once and got seriously burnt, and Weleda Skin Food was the only thing that could sort me out.  That stuff is awesome.”

It’s great. Seriously. Try it.

It’s £10.95 for 75ml or £7.50 for 30ml but, at the time of writing, the Skin Food Tin (containing a 75ml tube of Skin Food) is still available for £9.95 and would be my top tip for buying Skin Food as a gift!

Of course, there are other possibilities from across the Weleda ranges, but I hope you’ve found my recommendations helpful.  If you have any questions do get in touch and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Wild Rose :: Smoothing Face Care

Damask Rose petals

The Wild Rose Day and Night Creams, plus the eye cream, are what I personally use – so this is a range I know well – alongside the Almond Facial Oil and also the Pomegranate Firming Serum.

As I tend to mention rather a lot on this site, I have a tendency towards very dry skin on my face.  There has been some testing done of the day cream and it has been found that 41% of women in the test group found that their skin experienced increased moisture after 28 days of use.  I certainly enjoy using it and, whilst I could probably move along a range to the Pomegranate, I find the rose creams very cooling and soothing (rose has anti-inflammatory and cooling properties).  Certainly, along with the almond oil, I find it helpful when my skin occasionally flares.  Plus, I just love the delicate scent of this range and first thing in the morning, it gives me a little lift (alongside using the Wild Rose Deodorant Spray).

I wrote a little about the rose as a “Lead Plant” in Weleda’s ranges.  The rose is a fantastic choice for skin that is beginning to show the first signs of ageing and is generally recommended for the 30s age range (up until about 42 – so I’m close to the cusp here).  Rosehip oil is proven to help renew elasticity and adds moisture, helping to bolster your skin and reduce fine lines.

The day cream is great if, like me, your skin tends towards dryness, however, if you have normal to combination skin, you may find the facial lotion more suitable.  It’s lighter and quick to sink in, but with the same delicate fragrance as the creams.  The night cream is suitable for all skin types and for that bit of an extra night-time boost the rosehip oil is combined with evening primrose  to offer your skin more intensive support during its night-time regenerative cycle.  NB: The Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Lotion was named as a “Beauty Game Changer” by Teen Vogue (see links).

The Wild Rose Smoothing Eye Cream is lovely.  Light and fragrance-free, it contains Eyebright (Euphrasia) – a plant well known as beneficial for the eye area, along with delicate sweet almond oil and jojoba oil.  It helps reduce puffiness and is a fantastic gentle treatment for tired eyes (and as a busy mum of four at home, my eyes get very tired!)

I love this range – its delicate scent really appeals to me and it’s gentle on my often sensitive skin.  I use it regularly as part of the facials I offer and highly recommend it for the 30s-early 40s age range that I am a part of.

There is a corresponding body care and bath/shower range that I have reviewed here.

There is an ongoing offer of Buy 3, Save 15% across the Weleda facial skincare range. Just add any three of the facial skin care range to your basket for the discount to be applied.  Like me,  with my Almond Facial Oil, Wild Rose Day Cream and Pomegranate Firming Serum you can mix and match!

If you would like to try the range for yourself, I offer one-to-one consultations in the Doncaster area with a complimentary Weleda facial.  I would really enjoy helping you to find out if  Wild Rose is the range for you!
